At Althing, the Icelandic parliment, in the year 1000 the so called Lawspeaker, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, made Christianity the official religion of Iceland after deliberating for three days and nights. After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Althingi, Þorgeir threw his idols of the Norse gods he and his family previously adored into the waterfall thus giving it the name Godafoss. Þorgeir's story is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók written in the twelth century.
